Women to Know: Body Positivity Activist Katie Willcox

This month we’re partnering with Refinery29 to celebrate women who are reaching higher, bucking the system and changing the world in style, like body positivity activist and entrepreneur Katie Willcox.

She's the CEO of Natural Model Management and Healthy is the New Skinny, which she founded in 2011 as a blog about unhealthy model body measurement expectations and then transformed into a movement. As an author, model and blogger striving to change body image perceptions, she uses her platforms to challenge media-driven beauty ideals.

Bet you didn’t know this about Katie:
I grew up with a single mother who raised my brother and I on her own as she went to school and got her PHD. I went to 13 different schools and I have a fascination with space and the universe. I love questioning everything and creating my own beliefs systems.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe your style?
Comfortable, flowing, free.

Abby Skinny in Corvus, $89.00

How does style help you express yourself?
I love having fun with my clothes. I love prints and details that, no matter how small, make me smile. I think clothing has energy, and so I have learned to dress in a way that matches my spirit versus what I have been conditioned to believe I should wear to look a certain way.

Why do you love the fit and feel of Liverpool Jeans?
The fit and feel of Liverpool jeans are both soft and comforting, but to be honest, running after my one year-old daughter requires the ability to bend and move freely. That is why the stretch is something I look for and love about Liverpool jeans.

What’s one way you’d like to make a difference in the world?
I want to help teach girls and women to connect to their greatness that goes far beyond physical beauty or sexuality. Our purpose is not to be beautiful. Each one of us has important work and ability we can contribute to this world. More than anything I hope to teach women about the origin and effect of the appearance ideal for women so we can overcome it once and for all. And in doing so we create a new world for the next generation of girls that will result in a healthier society based in equality and respect.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to women about style?
You don’t need to dress to please others. Instead let’s focus on how clothing makes you feel. Wear things you like because you feel beautiful, or happy, or free regardless of the size. Be a rebel and put your feelings first for once!

Life motto:
Healthy is the new skinny. That has been my life motto so far and such a powerful experience in my life. I will choose health and happiness over the skinny beauty ideal and I hope others join me. You deserve to experience the power of being your authentic self in the amazing body that is your home.
